I already had a copy of "Basic Training," Jon's first book, and so I picked this one up without hesitation.Whereas "Basic Training" is a good starting point, this book easily picks up where the first left off, taking topics like emotional well-being, diet and the more esoteric topics that guys who want to jump in and get going at the gym are likely to overlook.
Jon gives a good look at some other forms of exercise, including yoga and stretching, as valuable additions to a fitness "repertoire."The book isn't focused entirely on training--thus the title "Beyond Basic Training," and making it much more valuable than any of the countless exercise titles out there.

I read the book and it motivated me.Now , if I feel lazzy and refuse to go to the gym , I open the book anywhere and read .Soon I would be working out . It is a great motivation tool but also a very logical approach to fitness . I like the diets offered, i like the workout offered and love the little tricks that the trainer of Jeff Goldblum gives us .(The forward is written by Jeff Goldblum) ."Tricks" , that helped this hollywood trainer get his people in shape . Too bad I do not live in los angeles . I recommend this book highly . Because it s the real mc coy .

I have been lifting over 30 years, and read at least 20 books on the subject.

This book is incredibly informative, it doesn't waste time with a bunch of information like how to do a bench press or how to do a crunch, but it gives terrific insights into how to structure a work-out, when to work out, nutrition, supplements, and other enhancements.

Written by an M. D. who is also a dedicated bodybuilder, I highly recommend this book as a useful addition to any bodybuilder's library.

Charles Poliquin is largely responsible for my success in powerlifting and strongman sports.His first book,"The Poliquin Principles",is my training bible,and I have made massive gains from it.I also follow all his articles in ironman magazine and Flex Magazine.With that,I have to say I was a bit disappointed in this book.It has some very useful info,but a full half of the book is simple illustrations on how to do the various lifts.It also doesn't stress that you need a full body workout(which he assumes all lifters know).If you already own "the poliquin principles",or can get a used copy of it,bypass this book.Otherwise,go for it,with the caveat that you can't just work biceps and triceps if you want to get "big"...

It's funny how, because there is a picture showing a woman running up front, that some people assume this is a book soley for women.Not so.This is a nice, rounded introduction to off-road running for everyone.Barrios gives useful advice on gear, technique, etiquette, health maintenance and first-aid.Even more enjoyable to me is her encouragement to see trail running as belonging to a much wider population than just the ultra adventurists.Trail running doesn't have to be only a competitive endeavour -- it can also be a fun way to bring some activity and connection to nature into our lives.It can even be meditative, a nice break from an otherwise frenetic life.

Well worth the investment, especially if you are tentatively considering starting in.

I got quite a bit of good information from this book and with that information I was able to finally bust through a plateau that I'd been struggling with for months.Could I have gotten this information for free off the Internet?Probably.But, I was getting tired of reading articles here and there and wanted one good source of information that I could read in the bathroom.

Colker's book was particularly helpful for me in that it got me away from machines and instead doing more free-weight exercises.I'm also doing way more squats and deadlifts.The section on supplements was very useful in that I was finally getting information from someone with a medical background instead of a web page that also sold supplements.

This book loses a star for me for lack of a good editor.There are frequent tangential digressions, some poor organization, and much confusion over when to use "then" versus "than".But, if you're not expecting the writing skill of a Hemingway, you probably won't be bothered by this stuff.
